Latch Page

To improve the processing of online transactions within an Oracle system, you can change the SPIN_COUNT (or _SPIN_COUNT) value that Oracle uses when assigning latches to processes. The value of SPIN_COUNT specifies the number of times that a process actively tries to obtain a latch before it temporarily goes into sleep mode.

You can use the Latch Tuning page to find the optimum value for SPIN_COUNT. Tuning The Value of SPIN_COUNT

To open the Latch Page

  1. Select the Spotlight on Oracle connection in the Spotlight Browser.
  2. Click Tuning | Latch.

Charts on the Latch page

Chart Description
Latch Efficiency

A chart that plots two types of information against time:

  • spin miss rate - shows how often a process fails to obtain a latch
  • sleep rate - shows how often a process postpones its attempt to obtain a latch.

A process continues the cycle of spinning and sleeping until it obtains the latch.

Event Waits

A chart that shows the amount of time (in milliseconds) that sessions have spent waiting on various events per second.

It is the same as the Activity | Waits Page | Event Waits chart.

CPU Utilization

A chart that shows the percentage of time that the CPU spends in the user mode and in the privileged (kernel) mode.

This is the same as the Operating SystemOS Performance PageCPU Utilization chart.

Call Rates

A chart that shows the rate of database calls made to all connected sessions.

It is the same as the Activity | Summary Page | Call Rates chart.
