Spotlight on SQL Server 10.0.3 - Getting Started Guide

CPU - Average CPU Usage Alarm

The CPU - Average CPU Usage alarm is activated when the average CPU utilization of the system exceeds a threshold. This value is taken over a specific number of background collections.

Sustained high CPU utilization can adversely effect the performance of the system.

When this alarm is current, you should:

  • Look at the Processes tab on the Processes drilldown to see which Windows process is consuming the CPU. SQL Server is shown as the process called sqlservr.
  • Consider upgrading to a faster CPU or adding processors to your system.
  • Look at the Paging Activity page on the Memory drilldown to see if there is a high paging rate. High paging rate can cause inflated CPU utilization. If this is the case, adding more memory to the system may overcome the problem.
