Bare Metal Restore/Virtual Export of 2012 or 2012 R2 Xen Machine Does Not Boot -
Description
This article describes an issue where a server 2012/2012 R2 XenServer guest is restored to a XenServer guest using the bare metal restore process (BMR) or virtual export to ESXi/Hyper-V and the restored machine does not boot. -
Cause
The BMR process will complete successfully, however the restored machine does not boot with error:SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (xen.sys) 0xc0000001The issue is with server 2012/2012 R2 running Xentools 6.5. The Xentools will need to be removed to boot the machine, then can be reinstalled. -
Resolution

The Windows registry contains information critical to your computer and applications. Make sure you back up the registry before modifying it. For more information on the Windows Registry Editor and how to back up and restore it, refer to Microsoft Article ID 256986 “Description of the Microsoft Windows registry” at Microsoft Support.
On the restored machine, do the following:
- Start the machine in Safe Mode.
- Open a command prompt window.
- Enter: REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\MSIServer" /VE /T REG_SZ /F /D "Service"
- Enter: net start msiserver
If the installer service started successfully, uninstall the Xentools:
- Open control panel>programs and features.
- Uninstall 'Citrix Xen Windows x64 PV Drivers'
- Uninstall 'Citrix XenServer VSS Provider'
- Uninstall 'Citrix XenServer Windows Management Agent'
If the Xentools uninstallation completed successfully, remove the driver files and registry entries:
- Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
- Find 7 xen drivers:
- Xenvif.sys
- Xenvbd.sys
- Xeniface.sys
- Xenbus.sys
- Xen.sys
- Xencrsh.sys
- Cut and move these to another folder (ex. C:\Temp)
- Open regedit
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services
- Delete the following keys:
- Xenvif
- Xenvbd
- xenPVinstall
- Xenlite
- Xeniface
- Xenbus
- Xenfilt
- Reboot the server.
The machine should now boot and you can reinstall the Xentools. -
