When running a backup or replication task, it fails with the following message:
Error: API Call failed with message: An error occurred while taking a snapshot: The parent virtual disk has been modified since the child was created. The content ID of the parent virtual disk does not match the corresponding parent content ID in the child.
This API call failure is received from vSphere. This error will also be logged in the event logs for the specific virtual machine. This error is caused by a Content-ID mismatch between two or more virtual disks on a specific virtual machine. This can occur due to virtual machine migrations (Storage vMotion / Migration), VMware vSphere internal errors, or user action.
In order to resolve this issue, it is important to correct the Content-ID mismatch. The following VMware KB's outlines the steps required to correct the descriptor files:
As a workaround, if the VM that is affected by the Content-ID mismatch is the virtual machine replica, it can be safely deleted it in order to have the replication job create a new virtual machine replica from scratch.
