Toad hangs at startup or launch and the Task Manager indicates that the application is not responding.
- Disabling the sound card, a corrupted sound card driver or a port conflict.
- Windows Update is not complete or needs a full reboot of the PC.
RESOLUTION 1:
Perform a complete Reboot or Restart of your computer and then retest Toad.
RESOLUTION 2:
Manually modify the Toad.ini file settings:
1. Exit Toad.
2. Open the Toad.ini file using Notepad. By default this file is located in the <Toad_install_dir>\User Files directory.
3. Select Edit | Find and Replace to change the following settings:
SHOWSPLASH=1 to SHOWSPLASH=0
PLAY_WAVE=1 to PLAY_WAVE=0
MDI3D=1 to MDI3D=0
RESOLUTION 3:
To modify these Sound Wave setting that is stored in the Toad.ini through Toad:
1. Select View | Options | Startup.
2. Uncheck the Play Toad wave file and the Show splash screen options.
RESOLUTION 4:
Rename the Toad.ini and desktops.xml files:
1. Exit Toad.
2. Locate these files: Toad.ini and Desktops.xml. By default, these files should be located in your "C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle" directory.
3. Rename these files to Toad.ini.old and Desktops.xml.old.
4. Restart Toad to retest the problem.
RESOLUTION 5:
Check your Oracle client/database connections. Please follow these steps to verify that your Oracle client/database connections are up and running.
1. Verify that you can connect to your database with SQL*Plus.
2. Please verify your path statement contains the path to the OCI (the Bin directory of your Oracle Home directory) and make sure it is at the very start of the path environment variable. For example it should look something like the following:
C:\oracle\ora92\bin;C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.3.1\bin;D:\C:\WINDOWS\system32;C:\WINDOWS;
3. Check that you have the correct oracle client connectivity dll. Under %ORACLE_HOME%\Bin you should find the following dll based on your Oracle client version:
Oracle Version Name of DLL
----------------------------------------
Oracle 7 Ora7x.dll
Oracle 8 Ora8xx.dll
Oracle 8i Oraclient8.dll
Oracle 9i Oraclient9.dll
If you have multiple dll's in the same folder, rename any you do not wish to use as TOAD will use the first one it finds. For example:
If you have ORA806.dll and ORACLIENT8.dll in the same bin directory it will use ORA806.dll. So you would rename ORA806.dll to ORA806.old to ensure we use the ORACLIENT8.dll
4. Check your registry settings. Open REGEDIT from START | Run and Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | Software | Oracle | ALL_HOMES you will see a HOME_COUNTER if it set to 1 then they only have a single Oracle home and you do not need to proceed any further with configuring the registry. If set to 2 or higher then they have multiple oracle homes.
Under the same node (ALL_HOMES) you will also see a LAST_HOME value, this corresponds to HOME0 under the ORACLE node. Make sure that the LAST_HOME value is set to its corresponding home that you wish to use. For example if you wish to use HOME0 then the LAST_HOME value should be 0, if you wish to use HOME1 then the LAST_HOME value should be set to 1.
5. Check that your TNSNAMES.ora file is valid and is located in the correct folder. By default (Unless specified using the TNS_ADMIN variable) it should be in your %ORACLE_HOME%\Network\Admin folder. For example:
C:\oracle\ora92\network\admin
or if using an older client (Pre 8i)
C:\oracle\oraNT\net80\admin
If TNS_ADMIN has been set under the registry or as an environment variable then make sure that the TNSNAMES.ORA file is in the directory specified for TNS_ADMIN.
6. Please ensure you can Tnsping (SQL*Net) or Tnsping80 (Net8) your instance. This will validate your connection to the database. From the DOS prompt type: Tnsping <service_name> or Tnsping80 <service_name>
For example:
TNSPING TESTDB
or
TNSPING80 TESTDB
This should return OK in milliseconds.
7. Force TOAD / SQL Navigator to use a specific OCI. Add the following OCI command via your TOAD / SQL Navigator Shortcut. Right click on the TOAD / SQL Navigator shortcut icon and select properties and then the Shortcut Tab
Add the following to the end of the executable statement in the "Target" command line (** Please not that you will need to find out what oraclient*.dll file you wish to use):
ocidll=c:\oracle\ora92\bin\oraclient9.dll
So it should like something like this:
"C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad\Toad.exe" ocidll=c:\oracle\ora92\bin\oraclient9.dll
RESOLUTION 6:
Completely un-install and re-install Toad. Please follow these steps to un-install and re-install Toad.
*WARNING - THIS WILL DELETE TOAD FOLDER. ALL OF YOUR TOAD SETTINGS WILL BE LOST. PLEASE BACK-UP WHERE NECESSARY!!!
Make sure that you are following this procedure for TOAD.
1. Go to your Toad Start Menu, and click the "Un-install TOAD" shortcut.
2. Use the Option "Custom" un-install.
3. Click the "Select All" button to select all files to be removed, then click "Next" button.
4. Several more similar screens will appear. Do the same on all of them.
5. Continue until you reach the "Finish" button.
6. Verify that there are no Toad Folders and Shortcut items left in your computer ( perform a Search/Find on "Toad"). Delete these folders and files if you find them.
7. Now, proceed to follow the same steps (1-6) for the Knowledge Xpert application.
8. After TOAD and Knowledge Xpert has been un-installed, restart your computer (recommended).
======Un-Install is finished=======
9. If you do not have an existing TOAD installer, please download a fresh copy of Toad from this link: <http://www.quest.com/solutions/download.asp>. Scroll down to Toad for Oracle > click on "Upgrade" (this is the full version)> fill out the web form and click on "Submit". The TOAD 8.6 Installer also includes the latest Knowledge Xpert for PL/SQL, so you do not need to download Knowledge Xpert separately.
10. Execute the new downloaded Toad Setup file.
11. Continue the Installation until finished.
12. Restart your computer when installation is complete.
RESOLUTION 7:
Please try to set the compatibility mode to Windows 7:
1) Right click on the shortcut
2) Go to Properties | Compatibility
3) Under Compatibility Mode, tick "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select Windows 7.
Depending on environments, a different OS may be selected.
