How to backup, copy, save database Connections History and Passwords for Toad for Oracle? How do I transfer, move or migrate over from old computer to new PC or between different versions or installations?
Starting in Toad 11.5 and above, if upgrading on the same PC, your connection information will automatically get migrated over when Toad is launched for the first time.
In addition, there is a feature that allows you to manually migrate settings and connection information, if desired.
You can find this feature by selecting Utilities | Copy User Settings in Toad's menu bar.
Since Toad for Oracle 10.0, if you are upgrading on the same PC, then you will be prompted to copy 'User Files' from previous versions. If you don't see your version in the dropdown, use the 'browse' to locate your previous Toad installation. Select the folder where 'User Files' is located. Do not drill down to the User Files to select. (Go up one level, for example 11.6. You can also find this information in the Help | Support Bundle, 5th line: User Profile Directory)
The file, CONNECTIONPWDS.INI, I is encrypted for security reasons. It is tied to the corresponding CONNECTIONS.INI file. Starting in Toad 10.1, it is possible to migrate saved connection passwords from one computer to another providing it is the same OS user.
Connection files CONNECTIONS.INI and CONNECTIONPWDS.INI are stored in the following folders:
Toad 9.7 and above:
Windows XP – 'C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle\<version number>\User Files'
Windows 7/Vista – 'C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle\<version number>\User Files'
Toad 8 through 9.6:
Toad for Oracle installation directory - 'C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle\User Files'
File Name(s): CONNECTIONS.INI (for version 8.x), CONNECTIONS.INI and CONNECTIONPWDS.INI (for version 9.x and above)
Locate files from original paths and migrate them to the targeted path accordingly as stated above.
*Note: In order to migrate passwords, in legacy Toad login window the Save Passwords option needs to be enabled.
Please see video below:
NOTE: This videos shows how to carry over all general Toad settings. If you wish to just move the connection history, you only need to move the connections.ini and connectionpwds.ini files. Keep in mind the settings files exist in different locations, depending on version. The video is based off Toad for Oracle 11.0.
