How are Active Directory migrated user licenses counted and from where?
Licenses can be added during installation or via the "Update License" button under the "Help | About..." menu post installation.
Either way, once added, the tool will update the ADAM database project with the purchased amount of "Migrated Users" reflected under the License "Details..." section.
When a migration session is used the DSA will populate the ADAM project with records of each user migrated. A separate routine is then runs and looks to the ADAM every 15 minutes to count those users. That information is then updated and reflected under the details section.
Note that synchronized users do not require licenses. Only a migration session will consume a purchased license, even though the Migration Manager interface shows Synchronization statistics.
The DSA and its services are what handles counting and updating of licenses. i.e. License control. In particular the Activation and Configurator services.
To verify license usage the DSA log reports on license counts and consumption when migrating user objects. It can be located by searching for "license required: license available."
In the event of stubborn license issues. Reinstalling the DSA can often help to resolve the problem.
