When do I need to use a custom Inventory Rule?

Before sending any software to a remote client, the K1000 appliance verifies whether or not that file is present on the target machine. If it is detected, then it is not sent to the machine a second time. In some instances, installed programs do not register in add/remove programs or in standard areas of the registry. In such cases, the K1000 appliance may not be able to detect the presence of the application without additional information from the administrator and, therefore, the K1000 appliance may repeat the install each time the client connects.

K1000 custom inventory rules were designed for this scenario. When the administrator defines a custom inventory rule for a software inventory item, the K1000 appliance uses the rule to determine whether the software is installed, instead of the add/remove programs information.

Use custom inventory rules when:

• The software or item you want to inventory is not listed in add/remove programs.
• Different versions of the same software have the same entry in add remove/programs, either with incorrect or incomplete "Display Version" information.
