Due to the open source OVAL “reference interpreter” is no longer supported and does not handle the newest versions of the OVAL feed, the SMA now uses the jOVAL interpreter.
Starting on version 10.2 of the SMA, a new licensed jOVAL reference interpreter is being used. jOVAL is a Java application, the OpenJDK runtime is included with the interpreter so endpoints do NOT need Java installed for the interpreter to work. This is all self-contained and should be removed once the jOVAL execution completes.
The use of jOVAL scanner will allow the use of newer OVAL definitions, currently on version 5.11.2 (as of the time of this document). To check the version:
The jOVAL scanner is also used in SCAP scans. No user effort is required to make the switch; the new jOVAL scanner will be used for new and existing SCAP scans. We still support SCAP up to version 1.2, but not the latest 1.3 version.
The user interface on the SMA will remain the same for OVAL Scan as well as for SCAP scans, so scheduling will remain the same as well as the way the results are displayed. To set up any of the schedules :
