An error similar to the following example can be observed in a WLOG file generated by the Exchange Store Manager (ESM) service:

23:39:49 ERROR: Unable to calculate clock skew:

23:39:49 [00000888] The service has not been started.
23:39:49 ERROR: Unable to determine clock skew. It is not possible to update folder last processed times.
Unable to acquire Time from Exchange Server.
Confirmation of this problem can be obtained by running the following command, from a command line on the Archive Manager services server(replace casarray.domain.com with the CAS array hostname):
NET TIME \\ExchangeServerName
The following error should be received:
The service has not been started.
Performing the same test using the the FQDN of the Exchange server will succeed however, e.g.:
NET TIME \\ExchangeServerName.DOMAIN.COM
To correct the problem:
1. On the Archive Manager server, create an LMHOSTS file in %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Drivers\etc and populate it with the name of the Exchange server(s) causing the error.
2. Ensure that LMHOSTS lookup is enabled in the Advanced TCP/IP setup for the Archive Manager servers Network Connection.
3. Try the above Test again, both test should now succeed.
4. Restart the ESM service.
