FLR - How to search through an un-cataloged Linux savepoint (4036735)

There are several tools you can use with vRanger FLR to find a file or folder within a savepoint.

The standard Linux FLR limitations and requirements still apply.

There are several limitations and requirements that apply to file-level restores from linux VMs.
Note: These are summarized briefly below. See the vRanger System Requirements Guide for more information.

• Linux - File-level recovery from Linux servers requires the use of the vRanger virtual appliance.
• Linux - Not all Linux file systems are supported for file-level recovery. See the vRanger Systems Requirement Guide for a list of supported Linux platforms and file systems.
• Permissions - vRanger requires you to recover the linux files to an intermediate Windows machine. When you recover linux files to a Windows machine, you will lose the file permissions.
• Source VM Configuration - the source VM properties needs to show the OS type as Linux. If this is not configured properly, vRanger will not identify the savepoint as a Linux VM.
  

To begin, select the Linux savepoint you would like to search through

1. Click My Repositories.
2. In the Working Repository Pane, right-click the savepoint for which you want to search and perform a FLR and select File Level Restore.
3. Wait for the volumes to be shown.

vRanger will mount the savepoint to the vRanger VA.

Option 1 - Search within the vRanger VA

1. Log into the vRanger VA
2. Navigate to the mount. If you run 'mount' you will see the savepoint mounted to /tmpvzmount/xxxx.
3. Use the 'find' command to locate the files you are looking for
   ex: find -name hosts
4. Once you have located the file you are looking for, you can transfer the file directly to your Linux target using the 'scp' command.
   scp /path/file user@target_machine:/target_directory
   ex: scp ./etc/hosts root@vc-readynas01:/tmp
   
   The files permissions/attributes should be retained when using this option. 

Option 2

1. On the vRanger host, open a cmd prompt and run 'net use'.  You should be able to see the Linux VA's share that vRanger is connected to - \\vRangerVA_IP\vzmount.
2. Using this info, navigate to the share using Windows Explorer.
3. Use the search option in Widows Explorer to locate the file you need.
4. Once located, copy the file to your desired target. If you need to restore the file to a Linux host, you will need to use another utility to upload the Linux file from the vRanger host to the Linux target.
   
   Note: The file's permissions/attributes will be lost when transferred to a Windows machine. If you would like to retain the permissions/attributes on the file, follow the procedure described in SOL84769 - https://support.quest.com/SolutionDetail.aspx?id=SOL84769
