Best Practices enabling Anti-virus Exclusions

This article describes the exclusions that should be set when using Rapid Recovery with Anti Virus Software

When using Anti Virus Software you should set certain exclusions on Real-time protection and Full System Scans(Scheduled or Ad-hoc).  It has been seen that using both products simultaneously may cause conflicts with the functionality of the core and/or agents.

NOTE: These exclusions are applicable for most antivirus software.

Antivirus locks portions of the filesystem while performing scans.  This can cause problems if the antivirus locks a portion of the filesystem that Rapid Recovery needs to perform functions (e.g., backups).  

The following list details the aforementioned exclusions that need to be be applied on Real-time protection and Full System Scans(Scheduled or Ad-hoc).

Process Exclusions

• Core.Service.exe located at C:\Program Files\AppRecovery\Core\CoreService\*
• Agent.Service.exe located at C:\Program Files\AppRecovery\Agent\*

Folder Exceptions

• C:\Program Files\AppRecovery\* or the user chosen installation path
• C:\ProgramData\AppRecovery\*
• The path on which your repository resides (make sure to exclude sub folders \*)
• *:\System Volume Information\*
• *:\System Volume Information\MountPointManagerRemoteDatabase
• *:\System Volume Information\WindowsImageBackup
• Cluster Shared Volume/System Volume Information/AAFileFilterData

File Exceptions

• C:\Windows\System32\drivers\aavdisk.sys
• C:\Windows\System32\drivers\aavstor.sys
• C:\Windows\System32\drivers\aavolflt.sys
• C:\Windows\System32\drivers\aafsflt.sys
• C:\Windows\System32\drivers\aafilefilter.sys
• *:\System Volume Information\AAData.md
• *:\System Volume Information\AAFailover.md
• *:\System Volume Information\tracking.log
• *:\System Volume Information\AALog_*.log

Note: Symantec exclusions do not accept wildcards. Therefore in the place of the asterisks use the present volume letter.

Note: *\AppRecovery\InstallerCache\Agent\NativeBootstrapper.exe is used by Rapid Recovery, it is responsible for operations with our MSIs.
