Description

Receive "Error Message: Failed to create VSS snapshot on the target machine (P_VSSUTIL_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR)." when doing physical backup.

You will also likely see Errors with Event IDs such as 8193 and 12293 within the Windows Application Logs.
Cause

This may be caused by a large USB hard drive being attached to the physical machine.
Resolution

Disconnect the large USB hard drive from the physical machine and run the backup again. It should now be successful.
