When resizing the scratch disk on the virtual appliance through vRanger the following error is thrown:
Error: 2815 - The expected result was not in the output. Expected: RESIZED, Output: FATAL scsi_scratch Could not get device name for id 0:0:1:0 (1)
This can get thrown when there is a permissions conflict with the account used to authenticate the Virtual Center to vRanger. The account used can be verified by right clicking on the Virtual Center in the Ranger My Inventory window and clicking Credential Properties.
This can also occur if you are using a Virtual Center VA from VMware and not a Windows based Virtual Center and you are using the 'root' account to authenticate the Virtual Center to Ranger.
The ESXi 5 permissions needed for use within Ranger are as follows:
ESXi 5.1 - https://support.quest.com/SolutionDetail.aspx?id=SOL102438
ESXi 5.0 - https://support.quest.com/SolutionDetail.aspx?id=SOL102435
It is possible if an account was created specifically for vRanger it has Create rights to deploy the VA, but not modify it. Either that, or if the Virtual Center is on a Windows platform any account that is part of that computer's Administrators group should have appropriate access to perform the VMware tasks through vRanger.
In the event that your Virtual Center (VC) is on a VA itself and not on a Windows platform you may have authenticated the VC in vRanger by using the 'root' account. This has presented challenges in that there seems to be a conflict between this account being used for multiple tasks. We would recommend that you create a separate account in the VC to use for vRanger operations involving the VC. Similar to the root account you can add this new account to the Administrators group in the VC and use that to authenticate the VC to vRanger, which will elmiminate the issue with the 'shared' root account.
