Monitoring selected IP addresses only

By default, a Sniffer monitors all web traffic crossing its network tap point. This includes content from all server IP addresses carrying traffic on the monitored ports. To monitor only the subset of IP addresses that you have identified, you need to set each Sniffer to filter by IP address.

IMPORTANT: You need to keep the list of server IP addresses up-to-date as new servers are added to your monitored environment.
To monitor selected IP addresses only:

Specify the IP addresses you want to monitor. For instructions, see Step 2: Specifying monitored IP addresses.

Click APM > Configure > Traffic Capture > Sniffers.

In the row for a Sniffer, click Edit .

Select the Filter by IP Address check box.

Click Save.

Repeat for all other registered Sniffers.

Excluding subnets

If you are not interested in capturing data for a subnet in your network, you can exclude the subnet by defining a Subnet Filter. Sniffers ignore all traffic associated with the subnet, which means the collected metrics no longer reflect hits and sessions occurring within the subnet. For more information, see Excluding subnets from data collection.
To add a subnet filter:

On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click APM > Configure Advanced Options > Subnet Filters.

Click Add.

In the Add Subnet Filters dialog box, complete the options. For help with options, see Defining subnet filters.

Click Save.

Assigning user roles

Now you need to control who can see the data and change the configuration. You need Foglight Administrator privileges to add users and assign groups and roles. If you logged into an appliance-based version of Foglight with the default user name and password, you are automatically assigned the role of Foglight Administrator, as well as APM Administrator and APM Operator.

No groups
You define users and their privileges in the same way as any other user roles in Foglight. For security purposes, you should start by changing the password for the default user foglight. Next, add users and assign them to groups and roles.
To change the password and assign user privileges:

On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Administration > Users & Security.

Click Manage Users, Groups, and Roles.

Click foglight and select Change Password. Specify the new password and click Confirm.

To create users and assign privileges, follow the instructions in the online help. Open the right-hand action panel, select the Help tab, and click the More link.

Next steps

Congratulations, you have completed the initial configuration of your Foglight APM Appliances. You can revisit your configuration at anytime to refine your settings or make your data more meaningful. For more information, see Configuring traffic capture and Configuring traffic analysis.
Foglight users with the APM Operator role can review the real user data collected to quickly identify performance issues in your web sites and applications. Start from any of the top-level APM dashboards to view aggregate metrics and drill down to more detail. Alternatively, you can run searches from the Search dashboards to find stored data that matches your specified parameters. You can replay hits to see what your users experienced while using your site or application. For more information about using these dashboards, see the Foglight APM User Guide.
APM Administrators can design analyzers to collect additional metrics and hit details for interesting hits. Whenever web traffic meets the set of conditions that you defined for the analyzer, the analyzer runs the actions you specified, such as incrementing a metric, updating a custom field, or running a script. You can also define analyzers to collect data about the sequences in which hits occur or to expand the session details collected for user sessions. For more information, see Configuring analyzers.
Finally, APM Administrators can use the Appliance Health dashboard to monitor the health of the Foglight APM Appliances and their software components (Sniffers, Archivers, and Relayers). For more information, see Maintaining and troubleshooting.
