Editing custom metrics

When editing a custom metric, you cannot edit the Name or Description fields. If you want to rename a custom metric, delete the existing metric and define a new metric.
To edit a custom metric:

Expand Metrics.

In the Custom Metric pane, in the row containing the metric you want to edit, click Edit .

In the Edit Metric dialog box, edit the options as required. For help with options, see Defining custom metrics.

Click Save.

Selecting pivot categories

Each selected category causes the analyzer to create a full set of metrics (standard and custom) for each item in the category. Avoid selecting all categories for analyzers that run frequently.

TIP: If you do not see the metrics that you expect to see for a pivot, check the global category settings in the Traffic Analysis Pivots dashboard. All analyzer-level pivots inherit these settings. Some categories may be set to collect pivot data only on a subset of category members, and some categories may be disabled altogether. For more information, see Managing pivots.
To select pivot categories:

Expand Metrics.

Click Pivots.

In the Pivot dialog box, do one of the following:

To include some categories (preferred), select the check box beside each target category.
•
To include all the categories, select the top level check box.

Click Save.

Breaking out metrics into dynamically-named topology objects

There are two parts to defining dynamically-named topology objects: defining tokens (which are variables scoped to the current analyzer) and using the tokens in a customized name. For more information, see Changing the name of metric topology objects.

NOTE: If you do not include tokens in a customized name, the customized name is used for the topology object (instead of the analyzer name), but dynamically-named topology objects are not created.
To create dynamically-named topology objects:

Expand Metrics.

In the Topology Object Naming view, select Customize name.

Specify a name for the topology objects and include tokens (from $1 to $5) in the name. For example, RSVP for $1, where $1 is an event name located in a customer-defined hit detail.

To define a token, click Add.

From the Name Token list, select a token, such as $1.

From the Source list, select the element that provides the substitution value for the token.

If the Source Detail field is available, provide a suitable value.

Optional—if the Extraction Expression box is available, you can create an expression to extract a value found within the context of the Source value. For more information, see Defining extraction expressions.

If you want the topology objects created dynamically (rather than having all possible objects created immediately), select the Don’t create topology objects if value is blank check box.

Click Save.
The name substitution appears in the table.

If you included more than one token in the topology object name, repeat the preceding step to define the other tokens.

Publishing metric timeslices for the Geographical Perspectives dashboard

To use the Geographical Perspectives dashboard, you need to publish the metrics collected by individual hit analyzers. The metrics are published as five-minute timeslices for the Geographical Perspectives dashboard. For more information, navigate to APM > Geographical Perspective, select the Help tab, and click More.

NOTE: For the Maps dashboard that you open from search results, the search results are used to provide the data. You do not need to publish metrics for this purpose.
To publish hit analyzer metrics for use in maps:

When defining a hit analyzer, expand Metrics.

Click Maps.

In the Maps dialog box, set the level of geographical detail you want to publish by selecting the check boxes beside Cities, Regions, and/or Countries.

Specify the number of data points to collect for each category.

Click Save.
