Title: DL4300/DL4000 WinBackups Virtual Disk Frequently Asked Questions
Description:
How large is the WinBackups virtual disk? Current release of will provision a 75GB virtual disk for Windows backups.
Why was the 75GB size selected? Historically 75GB was sufficient to save multiple backups of the Windows virtual disk (WVD) as installed. Over time the code and data on the WVD has grown with each new DL appliance release and that original space may not always be sufficient anymore.
Why does the Configure Backup Policy task fail with insufficient space where the Backup virtual disk still has available space remaining? In order to create a backup policy the Backup virtual disk must be large enough to hold the data currently in the WVD (uncompressed) plus some other system data. The data in the WVD can vary over time. Once a policy is in effect, the data is stored (typically compressed and incrementally (changes only) saved) when a backup actually occurs (based on the policy), thus an actual backup may require less space than the policy (worst case) requires.
I didn't select create Windows backup partition during first time boot up. Can I create one now? Once the various virtual disks used by the DL Appliance are configured via Dell™ AppAssure Configuration Wizard or Core GUI Provisioning steps it is not possible to provision later without undergoing a factory reset.
Can the WinBackup virtual disk size be increased? It is not possible to non-destructively modify the layout once all virtual disks are provisioned.
What if my Windows backup exceeds capacity? The windows backup configuration can be edited to point to a network share or to another disk volume on the DL Appliance. This can be done via the native Windows Server Backup Utility.
Are there any plans to increase the size of the WinBackup virtual disk? Yes, increased WinBackup Disk capacity is planned for future DL Appliance releases. Note this will not be a retrofit of existing appliances or available as RUU but would be for future factory install releases only.
