It's common for users to notice that the version number shown in the software doesn't always match the version number of the installer. This article explains why this happens and why it’s completely normal.
The difference in version numbers is intentional and occurs for a few key reasons:
Installer Version Reflects the Suite or Package
In many cases, the installer is part of a software suite or bundled package that includes multiple components or tools. The version number of the installer refers to the suite version, not just the individual product being installed.
Component-Based Versioning
Software components may follow independent versioning cycles. While the installer version may be 5.0, the core software component you're using might be at version 3.7. This helps developers manage, update, and maintain components separately without having to synchronize their versions with the installer.
Backward and Forward Compatibility
Installers are often built to be compatible with multiple versions of a product. This allows a single installer to support installation or upgrade paths for different versions of the software.
This is completely normal and expected behavior.
When referencing the version for support or troubleshooting, it's usually best to provide both:
The product version from within the software (often found under Help > About).
The installer version or package version, if applicable.
