Description:
"Data Operation halted due to unrecoverable NDMP server error" is a generic error. You will need to change the filter on the logs to show all warning levels and investigate the informational messages sent from the filer. Here some common examples.
Symptoms:
When running a backup of a particular volume a failure can occur.
Binary log shows:

The last message "No space left on device" is the reason for the failure.
What is occurring here is the backup using NDMP needs to create a Snapshot of the data on a particular volume.
There needs to be free volume space in order to accomplish this task.
The message; "could not create "backup" snapshot : No space left on device" Is the failure point on the Filer.
Resulting errors follow along with the complete backup failure;
