Introduction to this Guide

Welcome to the Foglight for SQL Server Hardware Sizing Guide. This guide is intended to assist with determining the optimal hardware requirements and product configurations to ensure the best user experience possible.

SQL Agents - System Requirements

Use the following to determine the amount of resources required to monitor your SQL Server instances.

Resources need to be allocated over:

•

Foglight Management Server

•

Agent Manager

•

SQL PI Repository

The above monitoring elements can be either distributed over different machines (preferable in large environments) or centralized. For more information, see Deployment Use Cases.

On a VM the following need to be reserved:

•

Memory - the full amount of the required machine memory

•

CPU - the amount of CPU MHz

Note the following:

•

For more than 100 agents an external repository is recommended.

•

The above sizing takes into consideration the equivalent Infrastructure agents.

•

To change the memory settings, edit the Foglight Management Server JVM settings in the server.config file located under <Foglight installation directory>\config\.

•

The maximum disk space measured is 2GB per SQL agent.

Agent Manager

Network throughput measured from the Agent Manager to the Monitored host average is 0.36Mbps per SQL agent.
