Reviewing bandwidth usage and estimated costs

The Bandwidth Usage section allows carrying out the following tasks:
•
Reviewing the database’s properties—for details, see The Properties pane on page 38
•
Reviewing the currently set pricing plan—for details, see The Bandwidth Cost Model pane on page 38
•
Reviewing the bandwidth usage—for details, see The bandwidth usage chart on page 38
The Properties pane
The Properties pane displays the following database properties:
•
Data center—the name of the data center used by the database. This name can be either user-defined or selected from Microsoft’s list.
•
Windows Live ID—the sign-in credentials (email address) used for entering all Windows Live services.

NOTE: Both data center and Windows Live ID are configured via the User Account global administration screen. This configuration is carried out at the instance level and applies to all databases within the instance. If these properties have not yet been configured, links from the Data Center and Windows Live ID fields lead to the User Account global administration screen. For more information, see Setting the User Account on page 71.
•
Database edition—the database’s edition type; either Web or Business.
The Bandwidth Cost Model pane
The Bandwidth Cost Model pane displays the following details about the bandwidth usage pricing plan:
•
Outgoing price per GB
•
Incoming price per GB

NOTE: The prices for incoming and outgoing data flows apply to both internal and external data transfer, and can be configured via the Cost administration screen. For further details regarding the pricing plan definition, see Configuring Usage Costs on page 71.
•
Average transfer—the average data transfer rate (kb/s) for the specified time range.
The bandwidth usage chart
The bandwidth usage chart allows monitoring bandwidth usage and the resulting estimated costs via the following views:
•
Baseline—displays the actual bandwidth usage compared with the baseline, namely: the upper and lower values, which define the normal working range. The baseline is an hourly average, measured over time.

Breakdown—displays a distribution of bandwidth usage between internal and external data transfer, as well as the total bandwidth usage
•
Estimated Cost—displays the estimated cost of bandwidth usage, plotted over time

IMPORTANT: While Azure is always set to work by GMT time zone, the data flow details are updated by Foglight—namely, on-premise—time zone, and are displayed two hours after the actual operation took place. For example: if the on-premise time zone is GMT+7, and the current on-premise hour is 1 PM, the data flows appearing on the screen represent flows that took place on 11 AM.
The Estimated Calculation Cost table
The Estimated Calculation Cost table displays a breakdown of the cost calculation of the data flows shown in the chart, via the following columns:

The data traffic direction:
•
Internal-Incoming—data arriving to the database from other Azure-based application
•
Internal-Outgoing—data sent from the database to other Azure-based application
•
External-Incoming—data arriving to the database from on-premise applications
•
Internal-Outgoing—data sent from the database to on-premise applications
Size
The total size of the traffic flowing in the specified direction within the specified time range.
Price
The estimated price of the traffic flowing in the specified direction within the specified time range.

Reviewing external data transfer

The External Data Transfer section contains a chart that allows analyzing several aspects of the data flow between SQL Azure and on-premise applications, via the following views:
•
Incoming/Outgoing—the ratio between incoming and outgoing data flows, within the total data transfer between SQL Azure and other applications residing on Azure.
•
Incoming Baseline—the incoming data flow (data arriving to Azure from on-premise applications), compared with the observed typical behavior (baseline).
•
Outgoing Baseline—the outgoing data flow (data sent from Azure to external applications), compared with the observed typical behavior (baseline).

Reviewing internal data transfer

The External Data Transfer section contains a chart that allows analyzing several aspects of the data flow between SQL Azure and other applications residing on Azure, via the following views:
•
Incoming/Outgoing—the ratio between incoming and outgoing data flows, within the total data transfer between SQL Azure and on-premise applications.
•
Incoming Baseline—the incoming data flow (data arriving to Azure from other applications residing on Azure), compared with the observed typical behavior (baseline).
•
Outgoing Baseline—the outgoing data flow (data sent from Azure to other applications residing on Azure), compared with the observed typical behavior (baseline).
 
 

Reviewing Database Usage

The Databases drilldown displays storage-related information about the selected SQL Azure instance, as well as the effect of the storage utilization on the estimated costs.
The first of this contains instructions regarding the use of the various panels of the Databases drilldown for carrying out a root-cause analysis of storage and cost-related issues. The following provide in-depth data about each panel.
