Create and Alter Logins

Note: This topic focuses on information that may be unfamiliar to you. It does not include all step and field descriptions.

To create or alter a login

  1. Select the Logins under the Server Security node in the Object Explorer.

  2. Select one of the following:
    • Click to create a login.
    • Select a login and click to create a login like the selected one.
    • Select a login and click to alter it.
  3. Complete the fields as necessary.  Review the following for additional information:

    Authentication type

    Select one of the authentication types.

    Server Roles Select True to associate login with selected server role.
  4. Complete the remaining pages. See Set User Mapping for more information.

Note: Right-click the object to see additional actions and tasks available for it. For example you can enable or disable logins, change passwords, grant or deny access.

You can define mapping between database users and logins and set database access and roles in this page.

To define user mapping

  1. Select the Logins under the Server Security node in the Object Explorer.

  2. Select a login or create a new one. See Create and Alter Logins for more information.
  3. Select the User Mapping page.
  4. Complete the fields as necessary.  Review the following for additional information:

    Users mapped to this login

    Select the checkbox beside each database you want the login to access. Enter the user name associated with this login for the selected database.

    Database role membership for

    Select the checkbox beside each database role you want to assign to this login.

  5. Repeat the previous step for each database on which you want to set database roles.

To create or alter a credential

  1. Select Credentials node under the Server Security node in the Object Explorer.

  2. Select one of the following:
    • Click to create a credential.
    • Select a credential and click to alter it.
  3. Complete the fields as necessary.  Review the following for additional information:

    Identity

    Click to select an object to use for the identity.

 

Create and Alter Firewall Rules (Azure)

Note: You can create firewall rules on Azure servers to restrict access to the limited number of IPs. If you cannot connect to Azure server select Tools | Cloud Computing | SQL Azure Portal to login to Azure Portal.

To create or alter Azure firewall rule

  1. Select the Firewall node under the Server Security node in the Object Explorer.

  2. Right-click the node and select View Details.

  3. Select one of the following:
    • Click to create a firewall rule.
    • Select a firewall rule and select to alter it.
  4. Complete the fields as necessary.
