How to upgrade to the most recent version of Rapid Recovery (4039525)

This KB gives best practice and recommended steps for upgrading previous Rapid Recovery builds to the most recent version of Rapid Recovery 6.

• Once a product's lifecycle has ended (Support Discontinued date), it will no longer be available @ support.quest.com.
• Upgrade paths for unsupported builds will remain in this KB with the assumption required installers have been downloaded by the customer.
• Agent operating systems that cannot be upgraded to the latest Rapid Recovery build due to .NET limitations or supported operating restrictions, should be upgraded to the highest agent build possible (minimum agent build Rapid Recovery, 6.0).

Prerequisites (click on the hyperlinks to access required installers):

1. Sizing: Before upgrading, make sure Cores, Agents, and Hypervisors meet operating system and resource requirements per Release Notes, Sizing Guide, and / or Rapid Recovery Installation and Upgrade Guide located at Rapid Recovery Technical Documentation.
2. Target Cores: If upgrading a multi-Core environment, upgrade Target Cores first.
   NOTE: Replication cannot be resumed unless the Target Core is of an equal or greater build than the Source Core.
3. Core Installers needed by upgrade path:
   1. Software Core upgrade paths from AppAssure 5.4.3 or any Rapid Recovery build: Upgrade directly to the latest version of Rapid Recovery 6.
   2. DL Appliance Core upgrade paths from AppAssure 5.4.3 or any Rapid Recovery build: Upgrade directly to the latest version of Rapid Recovery 6.
      NOTE: RUU is no longer required with DL Appliances starting with Rapid Recovery 6.2. The Rapid Recovery 6.2 installer includes all Appliance Tab related updates.
4. Other Installers: Go to Rapid Recovery - Download Software and download other installers as needed:
   1. Agent for Windows - direct upgrade to latest Rapid Recovery Build.
   2. Agent for Linux - see Upgrading Linux Agent below.
   3. Tools and Utilities  - direct upgrades to latest Rapid Recovery Build.
5. Unblock: (Optional, but recommended) After downloading, go to each installer, right click, select properties, and unblock (if necessary).
6. Optionally, temporarily disable any antivirus or security software that could misdiagnose the behavior of the installer.

Upgrading Cores (recommended steps):

1. Suspend all jobs: Transfers, Replications, Virtual Standby, and Scheduled Archives. We do not want new jobs to resume until after upgrades complete.
2. Allow all active jobs to complete or cancel them.
3. Stop the Core Service as recommended in How To Stop The Core Service.
   If you have a DL Appliance, stop the Dell Storage Management Web Service or DL Appliance SRM Web Service (depending on build).
4. On the Core Server, close all instances of product applications: AAInfo / Information Gathering Tool, Local Mount Utility, Mailbox Restore, and DocRetriever.
5. Close all instances of PowerShell and any browser running the Core Console.
6. Go to the Core Installer EXE, right click on the file, and select Run as administrator.
7. Follow the installation prompts until install is complete.
8. If prompted to reboot, reboot the server.
9. Let the Core Service start and the Repository check complete. If Core Service does not restart automatically, start it.
   NOTE: If you have a DL Appliance, starting with Rapid Recovery 6.2, there is no longer a DL Appliance related service.
10. If upgrading from a build prior to 6.1.2, the repository will be reindexed. This will occur during the Repository check following upgrade and only runs one time.
11. Resume all jobs, resuming Replication only if Target Cores have been upgraded to an equal or higher build.
12. When opening the Core Console for the first time, you may need to clear your browser cache for the Quest branding to appear.

Upgrading Windows Agents:

1. Upgrade Agents from the Core Console:
   1. Selecting Protect | Deploy Agent Software.
   2. In the Deploy Agent Software Wizard choose Local Core as Source (this will list Agents already protected on the Core), and click Next.
   3. Select Agents you want to upgrade, if you wish to restart the machines automatically, and click Finish. NOTE: A reboot of the Agent is required for an upgrade to complete and new features to take effect.
2. Upgrade Agents manually:
   1. Copy x86 or x64 installer to Agent Server.
   2. Go to the Agent Installer EXE, right click on the file, and select Run as administrator.
   3. Follow the installation prompts until install is complete, reboot when completed. NOTE: A reboot of the Agent is required for an upgrade to complete and new features to take effect.
3. If an Agent will be staying at AppAssure 5.4.3, you can apply Update 4. This is optional, and does not require a reboot to apply.

Upgrading Linux Agents:

1. Follow steps provided here - Linux - Script to install/Upgrade Supported Linux Agents to Rapid Recovery.

Upgrading Hypervisors:

1. ESXi Hypervisors:
   1. Agentless protection requires the host to be at minimum 5.0.0 build 623860. Build 6.0 or higher is recommended.
2. Hyper-V Hypervisors:
   1. Requires .NET 4.5.2 or higher and .NET 2.0. If your Hypervisor OS cannot run .NET 4.5.2 or higher, Rapid Recovery will not be able to export to it.
   2. Agentless protection requires Hyper-V hosts to be 2012 R2 or higher.
