Upgrade Failed failed at step "Running Script: Upgrade_Nullables.sql"

Enterprise Reporter SQL database upgrade failed at step "Running Script: Upgrade_Nullables.sql" with error:

"DbUpgradeBlock.Execute:Exit.

ExecuteNonQuery failed for Database 'dbReporter'. An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch.

The statistics 'LDM_TOMBSTONED' is dependent on column 'LDM_TOMBSTONED'. Alter TABLE ALTER COLUMN LDM_TOMBSTONED failed because one or more objects access this column"


 

The "LDM_TOMBSTONED" statistics found are what is stopping the database upgrade. They are user-created and the SQL script doesn't know how to remove them and re-add them to the DB (unlike auto-created stats, which work fine without table alterations). The customer needs to remove all user-created stats from the database, upgrade, then recreate the stats they need. This is an unfortunate limitation of SQL statistics.

Run the following SQL query against your ER database:

SELECT * FROM sys.stats WHERE user_created = 1

If you see any results from this query, then this will tell you that the database has user-created statistics present and also which ones you have.

Please note that these user-created statistics were not created by or from Enterprise Reporter. Therefore, there is no way to access them from the application because they were not created by it. They were probably created by a DBA with access to the SQL database who desired those stats to be reported by the DB.

However, it isn't recommended to manually create statistics on the ER database or alter it in any way outside of the product GUI (unless it is instructed by support) as this will put you in an unsupported state.

To fix the issue, you will need to restore the database to its last healthy and reliable state, ask your DBA to remove these user-created stats from the "sys.stats" table, and then attempt the upgrade as usual, this time it should finish without issues.

Product Enhancement ID 437086 was logged to give the Enterprise Reporter SQL database awareness of user-created statistics existence when it is upgraded as this was not in mind when it was originally designed.
