"ERROR: Session.Login: Unable to initialize MAPI subsystem. [80004005] Unspecified error" (4276200)

The following error is logged in the ESM log file:

ERROR: Session.Login: Unable to initialize MAPI subsystem.:
[80004005] Unspecified error

This error is caused by MAPI corruption or incorrect MAPI installed on the Archive Manager server. Having Outlook installed on Archive Manager will cause this error due to a MAPI conflict..

Resolution 1

When archiving Exchange 2003, 2007 or 2010 environments, one of the following prerequisites should be installed on the Archive Manager server:

• Microsoft Exchange System Manager 2003 (Exchange 2000 or 2003)
• Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI/CDO 1.2.1 (Exchange 2003, 2007 and 2010)

If the above prerequisites are already installed, uninstall and reinstalling Exchange System Manager or MAPI/CDO 1.2.1 may resolve the error.

Resolution 2

1. If Microsoft Outlook is installed on the Archive Manager server, uninstall Microsoft Outlook.
2. Remove either Microsoft Exchange System Manager (Exchange 2000 or 2003) or MAPI/CDO 1.2.1 (Exchange 2007 and 2010) on the Archive Manager server.
3. Rename the mapi32.dll file to mapi32.old.
4. Install Microsoft Exchange System Manager (Exchange 2000 or 2003) or MAPI/CDO 1.2.1 (Exchange 2007 and 2010).

Resolution 3

If the errors persist after completing both resolutions above, a complete uninstall and reinstall of MAPI may be required. Please review SOL88691 for instructions on performing a complete uninstall and install of MAPI CDO.
