Create Jobs

To create a job

  1. Select the Job Manager pane (CTRL+5).

  2. Select the SQL Server Jobs icon.
  3. Select an instance.
  4. Right-click the instance and select Create New Job.
  5. Review the following for additional information:

    Owner

    Do one of the following:

    • Select the job owner from the list

    • Enter an existing SQL Server login or Windows domain account (domain\username)

    Category

    Select a job category from one of the following:

    • Uncategorized (Local)—Groups jobs on the same instance where the job is stored.

    • Data Collector—Provides one central point for data collection across your database servers and applications.

    • Database Engine Tuning Advisor—helps you select and create an optimal set of indexes, indexed views, and partitions without requiring an expert understanding of the structure of the database or the internals of Microsoft SQL Server.

    • Database Maintenance—Groups general database maintenance actions.

    • Full-Text—Groups indexing actions for full-text catalogs.  

    • Jobs from MSX—Groups jobs from a master server associated with a target server.

    • Log Shipping—Groups jobs used to back up, copy and restore a Subscriber database transaction log to the Publisher database.

    • REPL-Alert Response—Groups predefined alert response jobs when a system is configured as a distributor.

    • REPL-Checkup—Groups jobs used to check whether the replication agents are not actively logging history.

    • REPL-Distribution—Groups jobs used to distribute data to users.

    • REPL-Distribution Cleanup—Groups Distribution clean up jobs.

    • REPL-History Cleanup—Groups Agent history clean up jobs.

    • REPL-LogReader—Groups jobs used to run the Replication Log Reader Agent utility.

    • REPL-Merge—Groups jobs used to run the Replication Merge Agent utility.

    • REPL-QueueReader—Groups jobs used to run the Replication Queue Reader Agent utility.

    • REPL-Snapshot—Groups jobs used to run the Replication Snapshot Agent utility.

    • REPL-Subscription Cleanup—Groups jobs used to clean up metadata in the MSmerge_contents and MSmerge_tombstone system tables.

    • Uncategorized (Multi-Server)—Groups jobs that run on one or more servers.

    Click to view jobs assigned to the selected category.

  6. Describe job steps. For more information, see About Describing Job Steps.

    NOTE: You must add at least one step to create a valid job.

  1. Setting a Job Schedule.
  2. Define conditions that trigger an alert. For more information, see About Defining Alerts.
  3. Set the actions to perform when the job completes. For more information, see Set End-of-Job Actions.

TIP: To edit, copy, start/stop, or enable/disable a job, right-click the job in the List or Calendar tab and select an option.
