If you are planning to migrate to Office 365 and are currently using Archive Manager to archive messages from your current environment, the largest factor to consider is how you plan to handle archiving in the future. If you are planning to continue using Archive Manager to archive messages, the software can be configured to connect to your Office 365 account. After the configuration steps are completed to connect the software to your account and mailbox settings are updated, Archive Manager handles mailboxes in Office 365 the same as on-premise Exchange mailboxes.
If instead you are planning to migrate all mailboxes and data to Office 365 and not continue using Archive Manager, the first step we recommend doing BEFORE migrating mailboxes is to restore all the data from the archive to the mailboxes. While messages can be restored after the mailbox is migrated, Archive Manager will need to be configured to connect to your account and restores to Office 365 are significantly slower and are more time consuming.
Scenario 1: Continue archiving with Archive Manager
In case you will continue using Archive Manager with your Office 365 tenant, these are the steps to follow in order to configure everything properly:
To connect Archive Manager to Office 365, the first step is to ensure that you are running the latest version of Archive Manager. You can check your current version by going to Help > About from the Archive Manager Console. Our downloads page lists the latest version of Archive Manager available which can be found here: https://support.quest.com/metalogix-archive-manager-for-exchange
In the following Article you will find a full set of instructions for configuring Archive Manager with Office 365 (for Metalogix Archive Manager 8.2 and newer):
To allow Outlook to open Metalogix Archive Manager shortcuts we publish a set of forms to your Exchange environment that Outlook automatically downloads and uses to open the messages. Before migrating mailboxes with shortcuts to Office 365 we should ensure that these forms have been published to your Office 365 environment. If forms are not published to Office 365, users will lose their ability to open Archive Manager shortcuts and the most notable impact is that they will not see attachments for those messages. To publish forms to your Office 365 environment follow the steps in this guide:

After Archive Manager has been connected to your Office 365 account there is a migration procedure that needs to be performed on mailboxes so that the software knows to look for the mailboxes in your Office 365 account. The process for this requires a tool (available from support upon request) and the following article details the process:
Scenario 2: Discontinue archiving with Archive Manager
To restore messages to mailboxes, open the Archive Manager console on the Archive Server and switch to the Archive View. From here you can use the Mailboxes tab to select groups or individual mailboxes to restore messages to from the archive by right clicking and choosing the option for restore.
When a restore is started the software will scan the mailbox for all message shortcuts the user has and when complete it will begin overwriting the shortcuts with the original messages from the archive. Please note that once you begin restoring messages to mailboxes we recommend stopping all your archive jobs or else when the jobs run they will re-archive the restored messages.
Full details about the restore process are explained here:
If you have already migrated mailboxes to Office 365 and do not wish to connect Archive Manager to your Office 365 account you can also export data from Metalogix Archive Manager to PSTs to be imported into Metalogix Archive Manager. We have an article that describes the PST Export process in detail here:
Please note this method is NOT recommended as this will create duplicates when the PST messages are imported into the mailbox in Office 365. In addition the PST export will export all messages from the archive for the mailbox, including items users may have deleted from their mailbox.
To remove the duplicates you will need to manually delete all shortcut messages. The easiest way to do this is to delete all messages with a message class of IPM.Note.pammessage as these are all shortcuts created by Metalogix Archive Manager.
