About global notification methods

Global notification methods provide different mechanisms for sending notifications when an event occurs.

The available methods include the following:

Sysop Email: Use this method to send an email notification to the Administrator when an event occurs.
Print Report: Use this method to print a report after it is successfully generated from the View Reports page. This method can only be used for Report Job events.
Run a Job: Use this method to run a job when an event occurs.
SNMP Trap: Use this method to send SNMP traps (notification) to a network manager host when an event occurs.

Setting up a global notification method

In the Navigation pane, click Configure Notifications.

On the Editing Global Notification Profile page, open the event class, and then open the event type that you want to be notified about.

Sysop Email

Select this method to send an email notification to the Administrator (Sysop) when the event occurs.

Before you can use this method for sending notifications, you must complete the following tasks:

Print Report

Select this method to print a report after it is successfully generated from the View Reports page. This method can only be used for Report Job events.

On Linux-based NetVault Servers, no additional configuration is required to use this method. The printer set up as the default printer for the system is used to print the report.

On Windows-based machines, you must do one of the following:

Run a Job

Select this method to run a NetVault job when the event occurs.

To use this method, you must do the following:

Set the JOBID variable in the Extra environment variables box:

SNMP Trap

Select this method to send SNMP traps (notification) to a network manager host when the event occurs.

Before you can use this method for sending notifications, you must complete the following configuration tasks:

Copy the file nvnotifications.mib to the “.mib” files directory on the host system running the network management software.
The “.mib” (Management Information Base) file describes the format of SNMP Traps that NetVault sends. You can find nvnotifications.mib in the etc directory under the NetVault installation directory. For more information about the location of the “.mib” files on the host, see the relevant network management software documentation.

Click Save to save the global notification profile.

About custom notification methods

Custom Notification Methods are created using external scripts, and typically used to perform some tasks when an event occurs in the NetVault Domain.

The script file contains header and body. The header specifies the script name and provides a brief description about the script. The script body contains the commands. You can use any text editor to create the script file. The script file should reside in the global subdirectory under the NetVault scripts directory (<NetVault home>\scripts\global on Windows and <NetVault home>/scripts/global on Linux).

Only users with a good knowledge of scripting using NetVault executable files and environmental variables should use this feature.
