Understanding the factory template

Foglight provides a factory template which includes the available alarms for each domain. Each alarm is enabled or disabled based on the default cartridge configuration and uses (where appropriate) the threshold values described in the alarm.

Template Behavior

The default configuration of the factory template is determined by global registry variables configured in the Rules Administration dashboard. If these values are modified for an alarm, they will be applied to the factory template as well as any template in which the alarm has not been changed. If an alarm is modified in a new or duplicated template, then any changes made in the Rules Administration dashboard to that alarm will be ignored for that template.

If future Foglight versions include changes to the default rules, these changes will be automatically incorporated into the factory template when upgrading the Foglight Management Server or any cartridges. Any template in which the updated alarms have not been modified will also update the default alarm rules.

Duplicating the factory template

You must duplicate the factory template before modifying any alarm settings. Foglight provides two methods for duplicating the factory template.

When viewing the template, click the checkbox or On/Off toggle. A notice will be displayed informing you that you cannot edit the factory template. Click Duplicate.

Working with templates

Foglight supports the following operations against templates:

Creating a new template

Foglight supports two methods for creating new templates: creating a new template from scratch and duplicating an existing template (see Duplicating a template).

The primary difference between the two methods is that duplicating an existing template copies any custom configurations in that template, while creating a new template uses the domain defaults.

When creating a new template, the default alarm configuration for the selected domains will be populated. Any changes to the default configuration will be applied to targets of this template. Future changes to the default alarms will not be applied to the new template.

1
In the templates panel, click to open the Create Alarm Template dialog.
3
In the Domains drop-down, select the domains to apply to the template.
4
Click Create. The new template will be displayed.
