Different connectivity errors raised from previous Oracle client version against new Oracle DB 18c and 19c -
Description
Lately Support is observing some different connectivity errors raised from old previous Oracle Client version against the new Oracle DB 18c and 19c. These errors could be like:
'First Pass Login' - ORA-28040: no matching authentication protocol
"Any Login error" - ORA-01017: invalid username/password
'While fetching object' - ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve service name.The first test to do, is trying the client connectivity from sqlplus that should return the error ORA-28040. This point us to focus on the Oracle Client connectivity and then apply any of the solution below. -
Cause
Oracle Client connectivity from old lower version (11g) against major version.

Resolution
Solution:
The DBA should set in the sqlnet.ora of the DB side the values of the
SQLNET.ALLOWED_LOGON_VERSION_SERVER and# SQLNET.ALLOWED_LOGON_VERSION_CLIENT (optional)parameters, to values that match the minimum version software supported in the system. For example, if the Oracle Client is 11, it will be:SQLNET.ALLOWED_LOGON_VERSION_SERVER=11Note: Starting from 18c SQLNET.ALLOWED_LOGON_VERSION_SERVER parameter is defaulted to 12. -
