The "The handle is invalid" is usually raised by the Windows client when Spotlight asks for resources but the client has run out of GDI resources. Most of the time these errors appear when several applications are consuming a lot of OS resources.
We have seen this issue before in Spotlight as well as other applications such as MS Outlook and Starteam and is always related to lack of GDI resources.

You could also try running Spotlight on another machine and see if you can connect from there...
OR .. you can also lower the memory and GDI usage in Spotlight as well:
Decreasing the refresh rate will help (ie. Options -> Data Collection -> Data refresh rates) Decrease the Graphics performance (Options -> Troubleshooting -> Display performance) Don’t connect to the Spotlight on Oracle instances of the RAC connections since these connections take slightly more resources on your client machine.
