NetVault Services wasn't running on the Client and the backup failed with "Child process died" error message.
NetVault Client Software was also re-installed by the customer, but the NetVault Services still wouldn't re-start.
The problem was that the customer had not installed the NetVault Client in the correct manor and caused the NetVault Software not to function correctly.
We performed the following NetVault uninstallation and installation steps to resolve the NetVault Services issue:
1] Make sure that no Backups are running to that Client.
2] Make sure you are logged in as the Administrator and Uninstall NetVault (Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs) from the Windows Client.
3] Check the NetVault Service has been removed (Computer Management - Services and Applications - Services). If not then make sure that it has been stopped.
4] Manually delete the BakBone / Quest Software folder completely (usually C:/Program Files/BakBone Software).
5] Run regedit & delete all registry entries referring to NetVault, BakBone or Quest Software under the Software folders within each HKEY folder (Please be careful when editing the registry and back it up beforehand!). Then close the regedit window.
6] Reboot your Windows Client.
7] Make sure that all the relevant prerequisites are performed as in the NetVault Install Upgrade Guide on the www.quest.com website.
8] Disable the Windows Firewall.
9] Disable any AntiVirus Software that maybe running.
10] Save the NetVault binary on your Windows Client machine locally.
11] Totally unzip that binary locally as well and you should then see a NetVault folder appear. Never run the Setup.exe from a network share or copy the installation files from a network share, otherwise it will cause installation issues.
12] Double click on the Setup.exe within that NetVault folder.
13] Select the Client installation version and follow all the onscreen default questions.
14] Once the NetVault Client Software has been successfully installed, a window will appear to confirm this for you.
15] Reboot your Windows Client and now you should be able to launch your NetVault Configurator and check that the NetVault Services under the Services tab and is now running.
