A customer wanted to install NetVault on their Desktop machine in order that they could Domain Manage the main NetVault Server from there.
Unfortunately a “No controlling server set” error appeared when trying to launch various functions from the NetVault Console.
The reason for the above error, was that the NetVault Client version was installed instead.
In order to control the NetVault Server and have full functionality of the NetVault Server as well, you would have to perform the following steps:
Note: No NetVault license key is needed for this installation, as you are solely using this installation to purely Domain Manage the NetVault Server.
1] Make sure that no Backups are running.
2] Make sure you are logged in as the Administrator and Uninstall NetVault (Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs) from the PC.
3] Check the NetVault Service has been removed (Computer Management - Services and Applications - Services). If not then make sure that it has been stopped.
4] Manually delete the BakBone Software / Quest Software folder completely (usually C:/Program Files/BakBone Software).
5] Run regedit & delete all registry entries referring to NetVault, BakBone or Quest Software under the Software folders within each HKEY folder (Please be careful when editing the registry and back it up beforehand!). Then close the regedit window.
6] Reboot your Windows machine.
7] Make sure that all the relevant prerequisites are performed as in the NetVault Install Upgrade Guide that is on the www.quest.com website under the NetVault Backup section.
8] Set the "Removable Storage" to "Disable" within the Windows Services and make sure that it has stopped.
9] Disable the Windows Firewall.
10] Disable any AntiVirus Software that maybe running.
11] Save the NetVault zipped binary on your Windows machine locally.
12] Totally unzip that binary locally as well and you should then see a NetVault folder appear.
13] Double click on the Setup.exe within that NetVault folder.
14] Select the Server installation version and follow all the onscreen default questions.
15] Once the NetVault Server Software has been successfully installed, a window will appear to confirm this for you.
16] Reboot your Windows machine and now you should be able to launch your NetVault Console and Configurator. If the NetVault Console cannot be launched, then launch the NetVault Configurator and start the NetVault Services under the Services tab.
17] Once installed, click on Administration - Domain Management within the NetVault Console of that Windows PC. You should be able to see the main NetVault Server under “Available NetVault Servers” on the right hand side and your Windows PC listed under “Controlled Servers” on the left hand side. You will need to Right-Click the main NetVault Server and select “Add as server” so that it is moved from the right hand side to the Controlled Servers on the left. Then delete the Windows name that you won’t be using on the left hand side (this is the machine you are controlling from and then shouldn't need a Server License in order to use it).
Close the NetVault Domain Management window and the NetVault Console. Once opening up the NetVault Console, you can then click on Backup and the main NetVault Server will be the first one listed in the drop down menu of each Console item.
