Adaptec recommend creating a share from the root of each volume. This share can be hidden from network users, and used only for administrative (backup etc.) purposes. During the creation of this root-level share, enable the option 'Create Snapshot Share'. The "Snapshot Share" may also be hidden from network users.
As an example, if the root-level share is called "SHARE1" then the 'Snapshot Share' will be called "SHARE1_SNAP" (by default). The name of the root-level share on the snapshot share can be changed manually, but the snapshot share should retain the " _SNAP" naming convention.
When creating the snapshots, in the 'Create Recovery File' pull-down menu select 'Yes' to ensure that the ACL, extended attributes, and quota information is captured and appended to the snapshot. The Recovery File Information may be required to recover from a disaster situation.
Refer to Snap Server documentation for more details on creating shares and snapshot shares, and taking snapshots. With the appropriate snapshot shares created on the Snap Server, configure NetVault to backup the snapshots as follows -
1. Start the NetVault GUI, open the 'Backup' window and chose the Snap Server in the 'Server Selection' list
2. Open the File System APM on the Snap Server
3. Locate and open the Snapshot Share (for example, "SHARE1_SNAP")
4. Locate the item called "Latest" and select it for backup**
5. Configure all other options for the backup as usual
6. Give the job a name, then Save and Submit the job
** The item "Latest" is a pointer to the most recent snapshot. All other snapshots are identified by date and time. Select snapshots to be included in the backup as required.
