NDMP backup fails with “Failed to start NDMP transfer” in binary log as seen below and at the same time we see “tape is currently in use by other operations 40:1156.” In the filer /etc/messages file.

The filer is unable to communicate with the Drive in question in this case drive 2. This could be a bus problem i.e. SCSI, FC or the drive it self has a hardware problem
As this is a hardware problem you will need to contact your hardware maintainer to diagnose further. If backups are running successfully to another locally attached tape drive modify the backup to write to the other drive until the hardware has been repaired.
