When we backup using NetVault we noticed that the CPU spykes on the mysqld process and eventually the mysql instance becomes unresponsive.
It is not clear why the mysqld is consuming so much CPU and an test mysqldump showed the same CPU consumption as when NetVault backed up via the mysql APM.
things like the buffer sizes, table cache, query cache can cause the cpu to run at an high level, there is an tool called mysqltuner.pl which runs performance checks for the mysql server and then makes recomendatations based on the setting of the server.
More info on this tool can be found on the website: https://github.com/rackerhacker/MySQLTuner-perl
