Problems with Client install, cannot use special characters in NetVault Client Name.

My Linux Administrator is having problems with the 11..4.5.15 Linux Client install. I need to understand why we can not register “new” clients with fully qualified hostnames utilizing a “.” . A new install with 11.4.5.15 changes the “.” to an “_” and fails the install if I try to force a hostname with a “.” Yet… clients already registered with previous versions are just fine with fully qualified hostnames with a “.” For the sake of naming standards and consistency, can we find out why…or how to get new hosts registered with fully qualified hostname utilizing the “.”.

From the NetVault Installation Guide:

The NetVault Backup machine name can contain a maximum of 63 characters. If the machine name is
longer than 63 characters, the NetVault Backup Service may fail to start. The NetVault Backup machine
names can include uppercase letters (A–Z), lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), hyphens (“-”), and
underscores (“_”).

Select a name using the supported character set.
