You may want to migrate NetVault server without using physical tape drive this article explains how to do this using a VTL (virtual tape library.
1/ add this license to production NetVault server so that you can create VTL on share in next step. This license will only last 7 days after applying so don’t apply until you intend to migrate.
Note you will need to reapply your existing NetVault server license when you have completed migrating.
BV-AHUKN-FZVVW-A5TN
2/ to make the database available we need to backup the database to a VTL that can be seen by the NetVault server and the NetVault server.
To do this create a VTL on a share that they can both access
When creating VTL you must use the full address of the share as follows
a/ In add library, right click NetVault server and select Create VTL
In library location you must use IPaddress and share location as below:
\\10.11.6.200\Public\richardd
This will create library in the location specified
b/Supply name of library i.e. VTL1
c/Make sure slots and media are of a size that will be big enough to hold the NVDB
3/ run NetVault database backup to new VTL on share
4/ remove the VTL from production server as VTL cannot be shared.
Note if original NetVault server is on the same network as the new NetVault server. While testing or migrating stop NetVault serveries as it is not recommended to have 2 NetVault servers with the same NetVault name running the service at the same time.
5/ install NetVault on VM using the same NetVault name and version of NetVault on the production NetVault server.
6/ tale a copy of the …/NetVault/config/diskdevices.cfg and edit. It will look something like the one below:
[libraries]
location=C:\VTL1
location=C:\VTL2
location=\\10.11.6.200\Public\richardd\VTL1
[drives]
location=C:\VTL1\drives\1
location=C:\VTL1\drives\2
location=C:\VTL1\drives\3
location=C:\VTL1\drives\4
location=C:\VTL2\drives\1
location=C:\VTL2\drives\2
location=C:\SINGLEVTLDRIVE
location=C:\NewDrive
location=\\10.11.6.200\Public\richardd\VTL1\drives\1
remove all entries for other VTL library and drives from the file see below for example:
[libraries]
location=\\10.11.6.200\Public\richardd\VTL1
[drives]
location=\\10.11.6.200\Public\richardd\VTL1\drives\1
7/ stop NetVault serveries
8/ replace the …/NetVault/config/diskdevices.cfg file on the new netvault server with edit diskdevices.cfg
9/ start NetVault services
10/ Open NetVault device manger, add library and you should now see the VTL on the share and add it as normal.
11/ right click and scan the media in the VTL
12/ you will now see the NetVault database backup in the restore window and you can restore the database. See URL on migrating NetVault below:
