Data copy and duplication fails with media timeout after 10 minutes
Data copy and duplication fails with media timeout after 10 minutes. We see one of the two tape allocated then ten minutes later the backup fails with “Media request has expired”. Also from the log we see “MS DataCopy Master: maximum number of slaves permitted [1] Media Manager timeout [600]”, this tell us that the data copy plugin timeout option is set to tem minutes.

Data copy has its own timeout option and does not use target set or source set media timeout option.
Note NetVault 10.05 has a fix for this problem so changing the Media request timeout for duplication and data copies can now be set to 0 which means never if NetVault is upgraded to version 10.0.5. The rest of this article is still relevant except setting retries is now not absolutely necessary but can still be used.
Modify the data copy plugin options. There is a media timeout set in the data copy plugin option tab.
1/ edit the job and see what data copy plugin option set is used. There may be more than one all depends on how many duplication/data copies have been configured.
2/ go to managed sets, select plugin options, select the backup option set and edit
3/ at the bottom of the option we see Media Request Timeout set this to 9999 ( this max in seconds 2.7 hours). Hopefully this will be long enough time to allow the data copies/duplications media request to be serviced.
Note : probably advisable to select “Acquire Source Media before Target Media” in the option set as well
3a/ If you are using secondary copy in the advanced option tab to duplicate or data copy a backup as a phase 2 job. Go to managed sets, select plugin options, select the advanced backup option set and edit the one being used duplicating backup. In the secondary copy section of the advanced option tab modify “Media Request Timeout” to be 9999.
Note : probably advisable to select “Acquire Source Media before Target Media” in the option set as well
4/ if there is more than one data copy/duplication option set you may need to edit these option sets as well.
5/ if the Media Request 9999 seconds is not long enough time period use backup retries in the schedule set to resubmit the job again.
There is a feature request BUG 28311 open to extend the range of the Media Request Timeout for the data copy plugin to be the same as the target set and source set. Please check future versions of NetVault release not to track this.
