Affected Product & Version – NetVault: SmartDisk 1.x, 2.x
Affected Module & Version – n/a
OS Version – n/a
Application Information – n/a
Description:
SmartDisk licenses are applied by a separate Command Line Interface (CLI) tool, not by the NetVault; Backup Graphical User Interface (GUI). It is a common mistake to attempt to enter permanent SmartDisk licenses via the GUI tools (either Client Management window or nvconfigurator). NetVault: Backup will not produce an error, as it is in a valid form, and will not apply the license to SmartDisk. The evaluation license will still be in affect.
Symptoms:
After applying a SmartDisk permanent license via a NetVault: Backup GUI, the evaluation license is still in affect. Licensed storage remains ‘unlimited’.
When the evaluation license expires, typically 45 days after installation, backups will stall and SmartDisk will appear offline. Attempts to restart SmartDisk will fail. SmartDisk logs will report that the instance is unlicensed.
Apply SmartDisk permanent licenses via the CLI tool. The basic form is:
./smartdisk.sh license -t XX-XXXXX-XXXX-XXXXX for *nix
or
smartdisk.bat license -t XX-XXXXX-XXXX-XXXXX for Windows.
Further instructions on how to use this tool can be found in the SmartDisk Installation/Upgrade Guide.
If SmartDisk is unavailable due to expiration of an evaluation license, it can be recovered by applying the permanent license by the CLI tool.
If you receive an error message saying that the key was not applied, run the additional command below to gather the Machine ID of your SmartDisk server:
./smartdisk.sh license --querymachineid for *nix
or
smartdisk.bat license --querymachineid for Windows.
Then compare the above Machine ID to the Machine ID listed in the e-mail containing your SmartDisk license key from the Quest licensing team.
If the Machine ID described above not match then a new key will need to be generated for the correct Machine ID of your SmartDisk server.
Please e-mail Quest licensing at license@quest.com, providing them the Machine ID output from the "smartdisk.bat license --querymachineid" command, and request an updated license key.
