Cause
SQLVDI.DLL can sometimes become unregistered when upgrading or "patching" SQL server itself.
It's was a common problem with older versions of SQL (SQL 2000) and still happens from time to time. -
Resolution
Perform the following steps:
1. Stop all of the SQL Services.
2. Launch Windows Explore, search for, and document the location of each instance of sqlvdi.dll. (customer should do a "find" for this file)
3. Click Start, click Run, type Regsvr32 <Path to>\SQLVDI.DLL in the Open box, and then click OK. (do this for each copy of sqlvdi found from step 2 above)
4. Restart the SQL Server and re-test the backup\restore.Also, please send us a screen shot showing how the SQL service starup account is listed in the services applet. ( Open the service applet, open the SQL service for the instance in question, open "properties" and click the "log on" tab).
