Currently our installation location is at C:\Program Files\Dell\LiteSpeed\SQL Server. During the upgrade to version 8.6.1, the installer/upgrader states that the default install location is: C:\Program Files\Quest Software\LiteSpeed\SQL Server.
Should we change that default pre-populated "Quest Software" install directory, so that the new version instead installs into our pre-existing Dell directory?
If we allow LiteSpeed to just install into the default "Quest Software" directory, will the installer recognize that we already have a previous installation in the previous default directory under Dell? And so then will it do an upgrade of that version and retain all of our configuration settings?
Or, (if we allow LiteSpeed to just install into the default "Quest Software" directory), will it simply be a fresh installation and we will now have two different versions of LiteSpeed installed onto that same machine? We want to avoid this outcome. So if this is the case, we will just retain our original Dell installation directory.
We here inTechnical Support, as a test, on one of our own machines (with no prior Litespeed installed), installed an old Dell branded version (like 8.2.1) and let it install into the default directory C:\Program Files\Dell\LiteSpeed\SQL Server. And then we created some configurations such as a registering my SQL Server that is on that same machine. And creating a recurring daily backup job in the 'Job Manager'.
Next, we installed the latest version of Litespeed. We let it install into its default C:\Program Files\Quest Software\LiteSpeed\SQL Server directory.
The installer didn't say anything about it detecting an already-existing installation of LiteSpeed in other directory (the Dell directory). So we had been concerned that it would end up doing not an upgrade, but a second new installation of Litespeed--just a different version different directory.
Though when we started up my latest version of LiteSpeed, we see that it has retained the configurations that had been made in the older Dell-branded version from when it was in the Dell directory. It really did do an upgrade from our previous LiteSpeed version located in the Dell directory.
Also, the install had automatically removed LiteSpeed from C:\Program Files\Dell directory.
Given all that we've seen here, when you upgrade, please allow it to move LiteSpeed to that default "Quest Software" directory. There are no adverse affects from doing that.
