Restore error: Cannot apply the backup on device LiteSpeed backup file to database -
Description
When attempting to restore the diffs on the destination side, the following error may occur:
Server: Msg 62301, Level 19, State 1, Line 0
SQL Server has returned a failure message to LiteSpeed which has prevented the operation from succeeding.
The following message is not a LiteSpeed message. Please refer to SQL Server books online or Microsoft technical support for a solution:
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
Cannot apply the backup on device LiteSpeed backup file to database <database name>. -
Cause
LiteSpeed sees that a Full database was not applied and left in NORECOVERY mode.

Resolution
The full restore needs to leave the database in NORECOVERY mode in order to apply additional backups.

Additional Information
If the database is getting standard full LiteSpeed backups and also getting NetApp SnapManager for SQL snapshot backups, error can also occur. So any differential backup done will be based not on the LiteSpeed, but full backup but on the latest snapshot.
Run the restore based on the last Full back along with any Differential or tlog backups. See SOL20862 for examples.
