This article answers common questions about managing Performance Investigator (SQL PI) data, including retention policy, repository growth, and purging.
SQL PI uses a fixed time pyramid for data retention. This applies to both SQL Server and Oracle PI. The retention policy cannot be changed in versions earlier than 7.1.5.
Granularity | Retention |
---|---|
1 minute | 6 hours |
15 minutes | 3 days |
1 hour | 2 weeks |
6 hours | 30 days |
1 day | 90 days |
1 week | 2 years |
Note: In Foglight for Databases 7.1.5 and newer, retention can be reduced. See KB 4376337 for details.
If SQL PI is not enabled, database agent metrics are stored in the FMS repository and follow standard FMS retention policies. For example, Blocking History may be retained for 3 days by default. This panel is not accessible in Foglight Cloud.
SQL PI data cannot be purged through the Foglight UI.
Manual deletion is possible via the repository database, but this is not supported and should only be done with help from Quest Professional Services (PSO).
Foglight does not provide out-of-the-box monitoring for SQL PI repository growth.
You may use a SQL Server agent to track database growth, but this may require an additional license.
Status
Retention policy is fixed in versions before 7.1.5.
Manual data purge is not supported; contact Quest PSO for assistance.
Monitoring of SQL PI repository must be configured manually if required.
