Cause
An interrupt is an event that may be generated by the UNIX kernel or device to interrupt the execution of a current thread. Interrupts usually occur when a thread or some asynchronous event occurs such as disk I/O or a clock tick. The kernel immediately preempts the current running thread to handle the interrupt.

Resolution
On a running system a certain amount of interrupts are expected. But excessive interrupt levels can indicate a possible hardware problem eg faulty disk controller or network card. The total number of interrupt on a running system can be seen by running the vmstat command and looking at the “in” column# vmstat 1 1
