What are the implications of inadequate bandwidth when using Shareplex to replicate across a WAN, especially when the volume of data to be transferred is large?
Â
General information.
If the WAN bandwidth is adequate, then there should be no issues replicating such volumes across different geographical locations. It may be worth noting that the amount of data transferred by Shareplex depends on the changes happening on the replicating tables on source database and not on the # of objects in replication. In any case, even if there was inadequate bandwidth, then the worst thing that can happen is that the target database will not get data in a timely manner since Export queue on source will be backlogged. Thus there can be latency on target at times.
Another thing to note is that if the WAN bandwidth is inadequate , then at times replication may use most of it whereby other applications accessing the same network may get impacted whereas on other times the other applications may use the bandwidth and Shareplex may be starved of the network. It may all depend on which application grabs the bandwidth at any given time.
It may be worth testing the replication first in a QA environment by simulating the data load on source to see if the bandwidth in question is adequate for it.
Â
There is no concept within Shareplex of sending data across using compression to relieve network traffic. Nor is it possible to overcome the shortcoming of inadequate bandwidth by setting any Shareplex parameter.
