How to exclude VM/Host/DataStore/DB Groups objects from Rule scope by making use of a Service.
Cause

Exclude VMs/Hosts/DataStores/DB Groups from a Rule scope using a Service instead of specifying long exclusion criteria in Rule scope.
Resolution

The most appropriate way when dealing with multiple machines is to build a Service to group together those Hosts/VMs that need to excluded and then use that Service as input in the Rule scope.

1. After building a service change the Rule scope as:

Single service example
VMWVirtualMachineMemory where $object not within^2 (FSMService where name = "name of your service")

Multiple services example
VMWVirtualMachineLogicalDisk where $object not within^inf (FSMService where (name like ‘Service_name_1’) or (name like ‘Service_name_2’))

2. If working with Database groups, you can define something like this:
!DBO_Tablespace where controllingDomainRoot within^2 (DBWC_GV_GroupIdentifier where name like "DB_group%")

Note: Where "DB_group" is the name of the Database group you created

Recommendations when using within.
Avoid using within^inf. The optimal depth value varies depending on how many nested parent-child objects are needed to be traversed to get to the object required. Experimentation in the script console goes a long way to compare different approaches.
