When trying to discover or to process a computer with Resource Updating Manager (RUM), the following error is returned in the log:
Requesting remote agent version.
Error 0x721. A security package specific error occurred
It has been observed that this error occurs when QMM console and RUM are installed on Windows 2008 R2 and the computer being discovered is a Windows 2003 Server or an XP workstation.
Also seen on Windows 2008 Server
Possible workarounds:
Process the affected computers without discovering them, by using the 'Perform the task remotely (without agents)' option.
Using RUM create a package and install a second standalone RUM instance on another computer, ideally on a Windows 2003 machine.
The same error can happen when QMM console and RUM are installed on Windows 2008 R2 and the computer being discovered is a Windows 7 workstation. In this case installing and using a second RUM console on a Windows 7 computer eliminates the error.
Another step to try is to use a GPO and to configure all involved computers to IgnoreDelegationFailure, as explained the following article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc778012(WS.10).aspx Note: a reboot is required after implementing this change.
Another workaround is to simply create a agent setup package and install it on the problem computer. Before this ensure that the computer does not have the Windows service for RUM or the file structure left behind from a previous attempt. This procedure has been successful on a Windows 2008 Server.
Note!
If you receive the following warning during the discovery of a computer:
Warning: The Quest Migration Manager RUM Controller Service is not accessible. Error 0x00000721. A security package specific error occurred
Then this could be caused by the computer account (in this case QMM/RUM console) existing in both source and target domains.
