How does QMM determine the CAS server/CAS array to use for mailbox synchronization?

The following process is used to determine which CAS server or CAS array to connect to:

1. The Mail Target Agent reads the homeMDB attribute of the user being synchronized, and finds the mailbox database in Active Directory.
2. It then retrieves the LegacyExchangeDN attribute of the mailbox database.
3. The LegacyExchangeDN attribute contains the name of the CAS server associated with the mailbox database. The Mail Target Agent parses the LegacyExchangeDN to get the CAS server/CAS array name.

In a CAS array scenario, the Mail Target Agent does not connect explicitly to one server. The connection is made to the CAS array name and the specific server is determined by AD/Exchange.

If you wish to change the CAS server association for a mailbox database, use the following command:

Set-MailboxDatabase <Database_name> -RpcClientAccessServer <ClientAccess ServerName or ClientAccess-ArrayName>

This command changes the legacyExchangeDN attribute of the Mailbox Database.
