There was an exception running the extensions specified in the config file (4262838)

When migrating documents from Lotus Notes to SharePoint the following error is encountered when attempting to migrate various attachments:

Error adding attachment 'x.doc' - There was an exception running the extensions specified in the config file. ---> Maximum request length exceeded. ---> There was an exception running the extensions specified in the config file. ---> Maximum request length exceeded.

To resolve this error the maximum upload limit must be changed in up to 3 places. Modify each setting one at a time before performing a migration again. If the error persists then modify the setting in the next location.

1. The maximum upload limit setting within SharePoint.
   
1. Go to 'Start > All Programs > Administrative Tools > SharePoint Central Administration > Application Management'.
2. Under SharePoint Web Application Management, click 'Web application general settings’.
3. On the Web Application General Settings page, choose the appropriate web application.
4. Under Maximum upload size, type the file size which you want to upload and click on OK. You can specify a maximum
   file size up to 2,047 megabytes.
   
2. Remove the file size upload restriction within NMSP Designer.
   
3. By default the web.config file is located in the C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\Virtual Directories\<PORT NUMBER>
4. create a backup of the web.config file found within the specific Web Application folder.
5. Open and locate both instances of the string <httpRuntime maxRequestLength and modify it to "2097151" within the web.config file.
6. save the file
7. perform an iisreset on the SharePoint server
   
8. Increase the maximum upload size in the web.config file of the web application.
